Transported to Another World: Common Themes or Cliche (mostly on Asian [JP, CH, KR] Light/Web Novel plot story)

The last time  (blog) I explain the general idea and basic layout for any general "Transported to Another World" story. On this blog I going state some common theme or cliche among them. Of course all these light/web novel are work of fiction, so even I (the reader) can sometime see it as unrealistic or call it ridiculous (depend on the novel) on certain novel on certain subject.

I like to note that most of what I'm stating below is based on JP LN/WN because CH LN/WN that I read (transport to another) that are translated have a very narrow genre and KR LN/WN is even harder to find (translated) with transport to another world theme but not as narrow genre when you do find it (translated). All theses are based on what I read so far or going to read.

The Character (a.k.a the personality) Among the Summoned

Let talk about some of the common "character" (aka: personality) of people who are summon to another world. For this I put them under one of four category that I thought up of. Now why summon and not reincarnation personalty explanation? It because reincarnation people are starting a new life in whatever new body they in and their previous personality won't matter depending on their new life and body. Now back to the main topic; these category is based on a common scenario and any story that not part of these scenario may or may not fall under these category (all category are personally made up by me) There no example because I couldn't found some of them while I wrote this.

Of course there are other summoning scenario out there but there too many variable that may change the summon person personality based on why they were summon in the first places in those story to give a general outline and they are not as common as this hero summon scenario.

Scenario: They are summoned as savior (hero, brave, etc) in order to resolve a crisis
In this scenario, the summoner side welcome the summon people with mostly open arm. The summon side is a world where magic exist. This is the most common scenario story novel in light novel & web novel that deal with summon to another world. Oh and in these scenario, our summon people are given freedom of movement and somewhat of an independent decision making after they were giving their task (if they did not end up as "category 1" type when summon). These category is based either on the main character and/or the character with the title "hero" or similar title during the summon. This is just the starting personalty when they are summon and those character can change, switch, or added category that I mention below in combination.
  • Category 1: The Bastard (More like a Villain then a Hero; a good chance of becoming one)
    • The General Bastard: something along the line like "give me what I desire (female, food, luxury, etc) and I do what you want. May treat companion as good or bad depend on their usefulness to the summoned person.
    • Ruthless: "As long you get the job done, nothing matter"
    • Killer: "Die" The people who get in these summoned people way dies, no question asks. And the first people who die are the people who summon them (usually). They don't care about the summon world. This person or people may end up as a "wanted" (criminal) person in that world.
  • Category 2: The Justice Syndrome (See the world as Black and White; a good chance of breaking down if they meet reality, a wall, or failure)
    • Self Righteous: A very dense person who see the world as black and white (good and evil). Generally will do things with good intent but not necessary as one. Will conveniently create an excuse for themselves if it does not goes there way or their point of view.
    • Self-Delusion: See the summon world as "not real" or as a "game" OR see themselves as "the chosen one" or "special". May have similar trait as "Self Righteous"
  • Category 3: The Moderate (The average person, a good chance of them being a hero in a sense) The category below are interchangeable from time to time for this category.
    • My Pace: Have good independent mind to not go with the flow to keep out of trouble and at the same time get in trouble.
    • Go with the Flow: A person who get drag around by other (companions, family's, and or friends).
  • Category 4: The Ideal Hero (a good chance of dying along with the enemy)
    • Mr Nice Guy/Ms Nice Gal: A rare type of person who both tolerance and understanding that will volunteer to help other if asks and/or see someone in need to help. Can be dense when it come to love. Is kind to everyone regardless of gender or race. Know what right and wrong (moral). A busy body or a nosy person.
    • A Puppet: Not exactly a true ideal hero but it is an ideal hero for the people that summon them. This type of person is easily manipulated by varies way. They (summon person or people) have very little decision making to do beside the task giving to them. They either a bastard or a fool or both but either way this type of person don't uses their brain much.

Background Of the Character

Regardless whether they are summoned or reincarnated, most writer/author often uses these background in their story plot for the main character in the "transport to another world" theme.

Here are the most common among them.

Current living style:
Neet and/or Hikikomori

Hobby:
Otaku and/or Gamer

Culture Introductions

Call it what you want but the main purpose is that the summoned person and/or reincarnated person want bring ideas, creations, and/or recreation of stuffs from the other world due to varies reasons. Most of the reason not explain but can be seen by their action which can be view as nostalgia while other time they doing it because (I assume, from a reader POV) is because they view the other world as too behind in technology & culture and want to do something about it (for themselves).

**On a personal noted: whenever a character recreate something from their original world, I often find it unrealistic even if they in a magic fantasy world because of one word: "Pre-Knowledge". Pre-Knowledge can be personal experience, personal observation of someone doing the whole process, and/or know all the necessary material/ingredient of the final product. The rest they can do trial and error. From how all these character are portray in most of these plot story, it hard to believe they have the pre-knowledge to re-create anything unless state otherwise. The other thing that not realistic is the other world people accepting all this without having any criticizing comment. The technology, that I can understand but not "Food". It like that world have no "food critic" which probably doesn't but you should know what I mean. In all the novel I read where they recreate a food from Earth, the other side are 90 to 99 percent will say it delicious. There about 1 to 10 percent where they will not say it delicious. I only found one novel I read that did imply such thing and it was a World System where the world is like an RPG with LEVEL and stuff and it give a "low rating" like  a food critic comment on that food creation. In real life, people with money that can afford to eat anything will HAVE "like" and "dislike" type of food. That mean in the other world there should have people (who have money and power) should also have like and dislike in different type of food they eat.

Here are the most common ideas, creations, and/or recreation of stuffs among them:
  • Food

Default Setting

Default setting if not define or stated by the novel but are often uses by every writer in theses theme. Like I explained, these are the default setting if the novel never stated any information on these facts.

The Civilization Level (other world/transported world):
  • Medieval
The Main Character's Age (before the transport):
  • Between Middle Schooler and University Student but below the age of 30.

The Usual Route Pattern for the Main Character

What the usual cliche route the main character will take or where the story will lead kind of thing. The Main Character becoming an overpower person later in the story is a common occurrence, depend. Here are some common sample of them (all sample is assuming the MC is a male):
  1. Hero Summoning
    1. The Main Character is with the "hero" title or not.
    2. Make a living (income), get stronger, and go on an adventure
      1. As an Adventurer: Get stronger, get companion (majority female), somehow get famous due to there action of overwhelming strength, rank up.
      2. As a worker: a job that usual stay in one place, get famous somehow
      3. As a Noble (optional if given): got promoted from doing something famous, might or may get marry to many female
    3.  Become someone who is equal or stronger then the "hero" later in the story or they are the "hero".
  1. Reincarnation (as a human)
    1. commoner ---> (become adventurer - make a living;use previous life knowledge to make wealth) ---> noble ---> higher rank noble
    2. commoner/non inheritance noble ---> (become adventurer - make a living;use previous life knowledge to make wealth)---> higher rank noble
    3. non inheritance noble/fallen noble/commoner ---> (use previous life knowledge to make wealth) --->  noble
    4. everyone ---> (use previous life knowledge to make wealth) ---> wealthy person, non noble or noble
